Stage Combat Workshops

At the Louisiana Shakespeare Company, stage combat is more than just theatrical sword fights—it's a vital part of our training and performance work. While Shakespeare wrote combat scenes into many of his plays, we emphasize combat not only for authenticity but also for its many educational and personal development benefits.

Stage combat trains actors physically, mentally, and emotionally. Whether learning how to safely die like Tybalt, smother like Othello, or battle with steel weapons like Hal and Hotspur, performers develop trust, stamina, coordination, and confidence. These skills are not only helpful on stage but also in life—promoting self-awareness, communication, and creative problem solving.

Our combat education promotes a safe, collaborative environment where choreography, trust, and teamwork come together to empower actors of all ages.

Building Confidence:

Through our combat workshops, actors build more than just stage presence—they gain focus, discipline, and physical awareness. Stage combat is also a wonderful way for young performers to work through fear, build communication skills, and discover their own inner strength. We prioritize safety, creativity, and mutual respect in every class and rehearsal.

Meet The Instructor

Liz had been doing theatre-adjacent activities since early childhood, but chose to dive headfirst into theatre in college. Before graduating from Southeastern Louisiana University with a Bachelors of General Studies, she was able to work varying crew positions on many shows at SLU, leading to a passion for working behind the scenes in theatre. During her time she focused her learning into teaching, directing, stage management, and all kinds of crew work. Since then, Liz has also found a passion for lighting and videography through her current job as an AVL Tech.

Shortly after graduating, Liz was able to participate in a stage combat workshop for the first time, which immediately ignited a passion for the work as well as reignited a passion for Shakespeare. Liz has trained with Dueling Arts International and is working toward becoming an Associate Instructor with them. She has also had the opportunity to share these skills with others by Fight Directing at local community theatres and schools when needed.

Upcoming Workshop

  • Coming this summer! Join us for a 2 week workshop exploring hand to hand combat and quarter staff.

Learn how to safely throw a stage punch, perform a stage slap, and how to fall in a safe way to keep your body healthy.

With quarter staff, learn the history and uses of the weapon, how to properly yield it, and the many different maneuvers involved in using it to fight.

This workshop also offers the student to receive certification through Dueling Arts International. Should the student choose to do so, their fight performance will be filmed and sent for adjudication. If the student passes, they will be awarded certification in these combat areas.
